02From rehabilitation to protection
Why Bukit Lawang became known worldwide.
The Bohorok orangutan rehabilitation centre was established at Bukit Lawang in 1973 to help formerly captive orangutans return to the wild. Tourism has since evolved; responsible modern visits focus on guided habitat observation and national-park rules rather than feeding platforms.

Beyond orangutans
The rainforest is a living network.
A journey may reveal other primates, hornbills, insects, fungi, lianas, and medicinal plants interpreted by a guide. Sightings always depend on season, weather, group behavior, and luck.
